Last night, my Dad was looking through one of his favorite books, Hymn Histories, and read this letter…
…..Dr. Rimmer spent his last year in California where he had gone to live after a diagnosis that he had terminal cancer. Each Sunday he listened on the radio to his good friend in the bonds of the Gospel – Dr. Charles E. Fuller of the Old Fashioned Revival Hour. One broadcast Dr. Fuller advised his audience that on the next Sunday he would speak on his favorite subject – Heaven. After the broadcast Dr. Rimmer wrote Dr. Fuller the following letter:
My dear Charlie:
Next Sunday you are to talk about Heaven. I am interested in that land, because I have a clear title to a bit of property there for over 50 years. I did not buy it, for it was given to me without money and without price. But the donor purchased it for me at tremendous cost. I am not holding it for speculation, for the deed is not transferrable. It is not a vacant lot, for I have been sending materials there for over fifty years out of which the greatest Architect and Builder of the Universe has been building a home for me which will suit me perfectly and will never need to be repaired. Termites cannot undermine its foundations, for it rest upon the “Rock of Ages.” Fire cannot destroy it. Floods cannot wash it away. No locks or bolts will ever be placed upon its doors, for no devious person can ever enter that land where my dwelling stands, almost completed. It is ready for me to enter in and rest in peace eternally, without fear of being ejected. There is a valley of deep shadow between the place where I live in California and that to which I shall journey in a short time. I cannot reach my home in that city of gold without passing through this dark valley of shadows. But, I an not afraid, because the best Friend I ever had went through the same valley long ago, and drove away its gloom. He has stuck with me through thick and thin since we first became acquainted fifty-five years ago, and I hold HIs promise in printed form never to forsake me nor leave me along. He will be with me as I walk through the valley of the shadows, and I shall not lose my way when He is with me.
I hope to hear your sermon on Sunday next from my home here, but I have no assurance that I shall. My ticket to Heaven has no date stamped upon it, no return coupon, and no permit for baggage. I am all ready to go, and I may not be here when you are talking next Sunday, but if not, I shall meet you there someday.
Signed,
Harry Rimmer, Sc.D.
This letter was placed upon the desk of Dr. Fuller the next Wednesday. By that time Dr. Rimmer was already in that land which is fairer than day. The land that he had seen by faith for over 50 years.
August Events
We were able to have dinner with the Northern family at IHOP one night!! It was a blast!
Hadn’t seen Rachel in a while so we met up with her for a lovely picnic at Kenmore. Isn’t the blanket perfect?
The Quanns invited us to go fishing with them one Wednesday! It was a great source of spontaneous fun!! The Chesapeake Bay is 64 fish shorter now We were so glad they invited us – thanks so much for calling!
One Saturday, we didn’t have much going on and neither did the Quanns. All of the sudden, we were together We drove to their house and they took us to a berry farm and colonial beach. Afterwards, they even had us for dinner! What nice friends we have!
We went to a couple Potomac National’s baseball games in August! Both nights the tickets were only a dollar, and so were the hot dogs! Don’t you love Washington Post’s dollar Mondays!!? The Danahers came with us one of those nights too!
I had been thinking about cutting my hair for a while, and although I really do LOVE long hair, I finally DID IT (and I’ll most likely be growing it right back out…)! My friend Lindsey and I decided we would do it together and so we did. We both donated it to Locks of Love, which helped us with mustering up enough courage to cut off large amounts of hair off our heads… Now it’s been a week and I’m slowly getting used to having short hair.
We did a lot of other things in August but we don’t have pictures of them. We’re happy to finally be caught up! Labor Day will have to wait ’till next time.
The day after CCYC, we went off to help with the
Girl’s Retreat
The girls started arriving on Sunday afternoon and immediately started having fun!! We decorated cups and bags and had supper before the first session. One girl got saved that night! :) *big smiles*
The weather was so beautiful so one day we decided to have worship outside. It was really special. Laura led a talk afterwards out there on sibling relationships. Her talk was part of the breakout sessions that day.
Each team had a themed color and made posters to represent them. Our overlying theme: “The Road Less Traveled”. The whole place was decorated with road signs and pictures relating to traveling.
We didn’t get any pictures of games and crafts because we were so busy having fun with them! We were in charge of the games again this year which included: Flip-Flop Tag (which actually ended up being more of a war…), Food Eating Relay, Waterballoon Volleyball, & a Dress-up Relay.
On Tuesday, after a HUGE shaving cream war and jumping in the pond, we all got cleaned up for a special dinner put on by the moms. All the girls in one spot getting dressed up is a whole lotta crazy fun!!
This is Katie’s team. This was her first year to lead a team and she really liked it! God used it to make her trust Him for all the things she needed going into it, and it was a blessing to be able to see God work in the lives of the girls on her team.
Our cousins, Emilee and Anne, got to come with us this year! Emilee had come with us last year but it was Nasia, Hannah, and Anne’s first time. We’re glad they came!!
After our very fancy catered dinner and session, we did colonial dancing (and not so colonial, too…)
This Girls Retreat is always a lot of fun along with some really good sessions and praise time. God always does awesome things every year and we’re happy we get to be a part of it! If you’ve never gone before, we invite you to come with us next year!! If you have been to this retreat, we have no doubts you want to go again…
